{REVIEW} The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Title: The Darkest Minds
Author: Alexandra Bracken
Series: The Darkest Minds #1
Genre: Young Adult, Dystopia
Publication: December 18th, 2012
Rating: ★★★★★

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. How about by adding another book-boyfriend to my endlessly growing list? Sounds like a good plan, right? Soooo ... Welcome, Liam Stewart, please enjoy your stay! No, seriously though, Alexandra Bracken is simply amazing. I only heard good about this series and therefore I was a bit sceptical because of all the hype around it but I can gladly say that it didn't disappoint!

At first, the story is a little bit slow and confusing because the author introduces a loooot in just a few chapters. All the abilities and colors weren't that easy to differ in the beginning, at least for me. But once everything picks up on pace it gets so much better! Alexandra managed to pull me completely into the story and made me so excited and curious for EVERYTHING.

"The Darkest Minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces."

The characters, for example, are all brilliant! I immediately liked Ruby and loved her even more, when she finally stood up for herself and got stronger. She was a shy, little girl in the beginning and was just too scared to do something about her situation but once she meets Liam and the others, she's awesome! She's brave and wants to protect the people she loves, no matter what!

Then we have Liam, Chubs and Zu. I freaking looooove them! Liam is such an amazing human being with a big heart, who wants to protect and safe everyone and who also always seeks the good in people - that can be a positive thing but could also be dangerous, oh well. He's the leader of their little group but still worships and values everyone's opinion, which only made me like him more. Chubs is the clever one, mostly grumpy and/or annoyed by everything and everyone but equally awesome! Especially towards the end I loved him loads and just wanted to hug him to death. The same goes for Zu - she was always quiet but totally fascinating with her ability and also really cute!

"Ruby, give me one reason why we can’t be together, and I’ll give you a hundred why we can. We can go anywhere you want. I’m not your parents. I’m not going to abandon you or send you away, not ever."

Like I mentioned before, after the slow start it's all action-packed and fast-paced and you just rush through the pages. The "villains" of the book are ... confusing? No, I don't really know. I guess I'm just suspicious of everyone, now that I finished it. I really want to mention one specific person ... I kind of believed him at first because he seemed nice and honest but then again I never trusted him. How could you ever trust someone who's capable of playing you the way he wants you - without you even noticing it? Exactly. You can't. Not really.

And the ending itself ... oh my god. That completely ruined me. I was a wreck. It was a rollercoaster of emotions and I still don't fully believe what I just read. I understood why certain things had to be done but that doesn't make them any less awful or sad. I'm just soooo curious for the second book now! I need answers! Good ones. Soon.

"Never, never, never. I am never going to forget you."

I guess I don't really have to say how much I'd recommend the book? In case you haven't read it, just go and buy it. Don't read too many reviews - read it without too high expectations or knowledge of  what it is about and you'll love it! It's definitely a promising start and I can't wait to find out more about the world, the characters and the "villains" in the next book!
