{REVIEW} Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

Title: Crown of Midnight
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Series: Throne of Glass #2
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
Publication: August 15th, 2015
Rating: ★★★★☆ +0.5

Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become the King's Champion. But she is far from loyal to the crown. Though she hides her secret vigilantly, her deadly charade becomes difficult when she realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. No one is above questioning her allegiance—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then, one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena's world shatters, she will be forced to decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie ... and whom she is willing to fight for.
Honestly? This was brilliant! I loved the first book already and this one was as good, maybe even a tiny bit better, I'm not sure. The writing was great, as usual, and the characters are so, so good! I mean, how can you not love/hate them? Very well-developed and awesome!

Also: Am I the only one who's constantly thinking of Dorian and how HE felt while watching Chaol and Celaena dance, flirt, look at each other and do all those things? Seriously?! I haaaated that Sarah J. Maas made him witness all this and even though I already know she doesn't care about our feels - like OH MY GOOOOD - I wished he wouldn't have been so exposed to those two. I really felt sorry for him and wanted to cuddle and hug him quite a lot. *sigh*

I worry because I care. Gods help me, I know I shouldn't, but I do. So I will always tell you to be careful, because I will always care what happens.

Speaking of ... I wasn't a huge fan of Chaol in the first book. I'm still not but I have to admit that he is indeed kinda cute and almost a bit swoon-worthy. He treated Celaena well and was there for her whenever she needed someone by her side. He fought for her, supported her and gave her a lot, so ... yes, I liked him.

But then there's that turning point. That horrible, absolutely terrible twist that ripped my heart in tiny little pieces. I'm still not sure if I already processed this properly because ... just no. No, no, no, no, nooooooo! How dare you, Sarah? HOW DARE YOU?! *cries in corner*

"To escape death, she'd become death."

Everything changed and while Celaena's and Chaol's relationship wasn't my favorite part of the book - by far not! - I still felt heartbroken. I mean, everything was fine at first but then it wasn't anymore. Nothing was the same and I just sat there and couldn't believe how it happened THAT fast. Celaena completely changed but was still the same ... kind of. This "new", darker side of her is different and maybe even a little scary to some people but then there are the ones who understand her. Who are there for her and help her through this hard time - I'm totally talking about my precious Dorian here - and who don't want to change her one bit because they love her so much. Gosh, I just love this guy.

I loved the new twists in this book ... magic, is all I'm going to say! I was really surprised but liked Sarah's ideas a lot, they just seemed to fit and made sense. The action scenes were all AMAZING. Everything was thrilling and exciting, so I couldn't even stop reading because I constantly wanted to know what would happen next! The Throne of Glass series is highly addictive, just bear that in mind when you start it! You won't get enough of it!

"Some things you hear with your ears. Others, you hear with your heart."

And the ending? OH MY GOODNESS! I knew about that one specific twist due to some spoilers I accidentally read but that didn't bother me too much. I'm not sure what to think of it all but I guess it'll turn out good in the end? I really hope so!

I'm very, very excited for Heir of Fire now and might even start it immediately. Although, maybe I should wait for The Assassin's Blade and read that first? Hmmmm. We'll see. Just let me recommend this series to you. It's amazingly written, has lots of great characters in it and a world that just draws you in. Give it a chance, if you haven't started it!

  1. Hi Yvonne,

What a great and fitting review! I love the whole series and let me tell you ... its just getting better. Well, at least in my opinion ;-) The best among those books for me was Queen of Shadows. And as for The Assassins Blade: I can only recommend it (review on my blog as of today) - as it tells the whole story how Celaena ended in Edovier ... and all about Sam ♥. It helps understanding some references made in later books ...

    Have a nice evening!

    1. Thank you for stopping by! I'm really excited to meet Sam but am dreading to start it ... I mean, I know this'll be terribly emotional but I'm not sure if I'm ready, ahhh! Also I'll have to wait FOREVER for my QoS edition to come out and therefore want to take it slow ... if I can. We'll see. :D

  2. I'm so glad you loved this! Heir of Fire is even better, The Assassin's Blade is going to WRECK you and don't even let me start on Queen Of Shadows because... fgaerjhgfaehg. But seriously. I am so in love with this series. I personally read TAB after HOF although I don't think it really matters when you do, as long as it's before QOS. I would also recommend you to read them slowly, because I promise - waiting for the next book is the worst. As for your Dorian part.. You should probably learn not to care. I did and it's suiting me really well. At this point Celaena is so damn badass that I don't really care anymore who she's with. Ask me to choose and I probably couldn't. (Although I should admit that I was never on team Dorian (a)) Jeez, I could talk all day about TOG.

Enjoy the rest of the series!

    1. WRECK ME? Well, great, haha. I already heard from so many people that I should have lots of tissues ready. I'm going to need them, they say. Oh my god. But yeah, I'm actually waiting a bit till I continue with TAB because I'll have to wait EXTRA long for my QoS edition to come out - I NEED THE COLORED PAPERBACK, NOT THE WHITE ONE, UGH!!! -, so we'll see. I'm really excited though! <3

    2. Uhm, yes. Tissues are definitely not optional. I'd take an entire box, you know, just in case. AND I SO KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. I absolutely hate this new trend where the paperback editions come out months after the hardcovers. I'm also waiting for the colored paperback. I bought the e-book now, so I wouldn't have to wait but UGH. EXACTLY.

  3. One of these days/weeks I need to start this book. I just don't want to dislike it like I did with the first book. But everyone does say the series gets better and better so maybe... *fingers crossed*
