{REVIEW} The Crown by Kiera Cass

Title: The Crown
Author: Kiera Cass
Series: The Selection #5
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Publication: May 3rd, 2016
Rating: ★★★★☆ or less?

When Eadlyn became the first princess of Illéa to hold her own Selection, she didn’t think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.

Eadlyn still isn’t sure she’ll find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you…and soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible—and more important—than she ever imagined.
What is it with those Selection books that make me like them even though I don't  really like them? This doesn't even make sense to my own ears. They're addictive and sometimes really bad and cringe-worthy but I still KIND OF enjoy reading them??? Either way, I'm happy this is the last book of the series ... and I really hope it stays this way. It should've ended after the third book but then again I ended up giving The Heir 5 stars anyway (don't even ask me HOW I could do that; I have no idea!! Need to change that ...) and this one didn't get a bad rating as well. Hmm.

I remember I was rooting for my beloved Erik / Eikko because he's just adorable and made the story somewhat more interesting, in my opinion. I just couldn't help but fall in love with him - HE'S SO SWEET AND I LOVE HIM! Kile was my second favorite but I never quite felt the chemistry between Eadlyn and him? Like, no? Okay, I admit, there also wasn't THAT much chemistry between Erik and Eadlyn at first but there were little hints to where this could lead ... it just felt better to me.

As of Eadlyn herself, I have to say that she was okay in this book. I absolutely couldn't stand her in the beginning of the first book but thank goodness she changed a bit (as well as in this book) - she's still selfish and mostly thinks about herself first but ... especially towards the end she realized how wrong she was all this time and actually starts to change her behavious and all that. I don't approve of all her decisions and I certainly don't think she's the best character ever but ... I don't know, maybe this book just mushed my brain and I can't think straight anymore. HELP!!!

The plot was almost non-existent, which is sad because this series had potential. There were rebel groups and attacks and she could've definitely told us some more about these things, make this a whole lot more interesting ... but she didn't. Instead she focused on Eadlyn and her duty and finding a husband and many other "unimportant" things. Seeing it that way is actually disappointing and yet I still enjoyed it most of the times ... oh my, oh my. There was one big plot twist that I absolutely didn't see coming - it would've probably been a really good one but it came out of no where and therefore I was like "Ummm, okay? REALLY?! NOW?!", so yeah. Without sounding mean, Kiera definitely has potential but I don't think she quite knows how to use it properly? She could've done so much better.

So, am I happy with the ending I got? Let's just say I'm glad Eadlyn chose the right person but she could've done that within one (a bit longer) book as well and we wouldn't have needed to wait so long - it was quite obvious to me, haha. Also, it didn't feel like a conclusion - there are unanswered questions about the kingdom, the people, the rebel groups and all I wanted of Kiera was to give us a GOOD explanation. A good ending ... oh well. I still had lots of fun reading this series and thought the books weren that bad but ... don't write any new books to this series, Kiera.

★★★★☆

And before I end this, please check out Maaike's hilarious review - just so you know, she gave the book +0.5 stars; bear this in mind! I agree with many things she said but still couldn't give the book a lower rating ... maybe because I'm actually pleased with who Eadlyn ended up, maybe because I have no common sense or because I just turned off my brain while reading, haha. Either way, I LOVE HER REVIEW!

  1. Hahaha, omg. I feel honored. Great review, Yvonne! I feel like maybe I may have influenced this and I would really like to feel bad for it, but I honestly don't. I'm glad you still liked the book, though. (Maybe you did turn your brain off, hahaha. Omg, I feel bad now) It's not fun to read something you don't like. We are now officially finished with this series - thank god, we can all move on to better things!

    1. I most likely did that, yes. I'm really glad though it's over. Should've stopped after the third book but oh well ... at least we're done NOW, haha. :D

  2. I never read beyond book #3 because this series was literally giving me nightmares. xD
But "there were rebel groups and attacks" sounds a bit like what happened in those first three books but Kiera never really went into that more deeply.

    1. What a wise decision! Honestly, there's no need to continue. I wouldn't really recommend it if you already didn't like the first books ... no need to torture yourself, haha. :D

  3. I've seen so many negative reviews on this book, I was starting to fear the worst. I enjoyed the Heir, and though I haven't read the Crown yet, I was starting to fear that I might be the only who liked it, and thus may feel inclined to put a negative review like the numerous others I've seen. But I'm glad you gave it a positive review! It really relieves me, and I'll be able to enjoy the Crown fully!

    1. Oh but if you liked The Heir, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one as well! There were just so many people who couldn't connect with Eadlyn so I totally understand all the negative reviews ... but everyone has a different taste so I hope you enjoy it!! :D

  4. I am so glad you liked this so much! It’s always great when a series finale meets your expectations.:) It's a shame the plot is a bit weak and you're left with some unanswered questions, but other than that it sounds great. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous review!❤

    1. Thanks so much, Zoe! I couldn't help buut enjoy this, EVEN THOUGH it was ridiculous at times ... ah well, once in a while it's GOOD to read something like that. :P

  5. The plot was nearly nonexistent, and that really disappointed me. And I thought it was wrapped up too neatly. I still enjoyed it though, and who she ended up with. But, like you, I'm glad the series is over.

  6. Ughhhh. I hated this book so much I couldn't finish it! XD It makes me so sad because I loved the first three and thought they were fantastic even if they weren't the best works of literature ever. The last two make me question whether the first two were as good as I though... I'm glad you were able to enjoy this though! I really hope she lets this series rest now. Great review!

  7. I totally feel the same way about these books- I hate and love them at the same time. Like, they're so cheesy? but fun? idk. so weird. You're right- the plot was awful but I still needed to know how it ended. I also gave it 4 stars despite being slightly disappointed!

    great review!
